Rabat – Morocco’s government welcomed on Thursday Peru’s decision to withdraw recognition of Polisario’s self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

“The Kingdom of Morocco appreciates and welcomes this decision by the Republic of Peru, which opens a new page in relations with this friendly country,” Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a communique.

Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its decision to withdraw its recognition of Polisario’s self-proclaimed SADR on Thursday and expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.

The move comes following talks between Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.
According to Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, the decision will allow for the deepening of political consultation and the strengthening of sectoral cooperation in different fields, including agriculture, the ministry added.

The communique recalled King Mohammed VI’s leadership and instructions, leading to international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Western Sahara region.

Under his leadership, “many countries have withdrawn their recognition of the separatist group,” the ministry said.

“Out of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, 84% do not recognize the [self-proclaimed] SADR,’ representing two-thirds of African countries, the ministry highlighted.

Many countries, including Spain and Germany, have endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible solution to end the Western Sahara dispute.

Spain endorsed Morocco’s autonomy initiative in March.

Many countries have opened consulates general in Dakhla and Laayoune in southern Morocco, in order to reflect their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
