Rabat – The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) today arrested an ISIS-affiliated suspect in Tetouan, northern Morocco for his alleged involvement in planning terrorist attacks.
A BCIJ statement outlined that the 36-year-old suspect has been active on social networks where he shared and promoted “extremist subversive ideology and incitement of the planning of criminal projects targeting people and public and private infrastructure.”
BCIJ placed the suspect in custory to determine the cicumstances of the case, identify his potential extremist plansand determine his potential links with terrorist cells operating both in Morocco and abroad.
BCIJ carried out the security operation along with special forces of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The operation is part of Morocco’s approach and efforts tackling security threats.
The arrest came a few months after the BCIJ apprehended another person suspected to be affiliated with ISIS in the city of Berkane, in northeastern Morocco.
The arrest took place in cooperation with BCIJ judicial police as well as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The recent “Global Terrorism Index” from the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has notably ranked the Morocco among the world’s safest nations.
“Morocco’s active role in fighting terrorism suggests the country’s understanding of the threat; the interconnectedness of its counterterrorism methods,” the IEP’s report detailed.
