Casablanca – Being the first gateway for Moroccans from around the globe to Morocco with a forecast of more than 1.5 million passengers in 2022, the port of Tanger Med Passengers has devised a temporary calendar in order to better forecast seasons of high affluence amid the ongoing Marhaba Operation.

The port currently represents almost 50% of the share of general traffic that transits through the Strait of Gibraltar. As this summer’s Marhaba Operation reaches its peak, Tanger Med anticipates an even higher number of passengers arriving during the first and final weeks of July, as well as a large number of departures during the last two weeks of August and the first week of September.

Because peaks on the busiest days might approach 40,000 travelers per day, Tanger Med port is encouraging its passengers to heed the traffic estimates issued by the port authorities while planning their travel.

The Moroccan port also urged passengers to use all available communication channels, such as the passenger port’s website, mobile application, social media, and the Tanger Med radio, to remain up to date on news and traffic conditions within the port in real-time.

In order to efficiently welcome these unprecedented numbers of overseas Moroccans visiting Morocco after two years of the COVID health crisis, the government has mobilized a budget of MAD 150 million ($14.9 million)  to make the required modifications to the receiving system.

The number of stamping counters at the marine station has been expanded from 10 to 16 to improve pedestrian access, and Tanger Med planned to put 32 counters to facilitate better arrival of vehicle travelers.

Increased shaded places, greater lighting, children’s areas, green areas, water fountains, and eateries would assist passengers. Travelers will also benefit from information stations, sanitary facilities, and an area dedicated to border health control.

In addition, the human resources necessary for passenger comfort have been enhanced to ensure the success of Operation Marhaba 2022 in terms of sanitary context and citizen public health.
