Rabat – The Turkish ministry of religious affairs confirmed the crescent sighting this Friday evening, with Sunday, April 2 to mark the start of the holy Ramadan month.
May will mark the end of the holy month in Turkey, according to Turkish religious authorities.
Ramadan is a one-of-a-kind month in the Islamic calendar. During this holy month, Muslims around the world fast from sunrise after the “Fajr” (dawn) prayers till sunset “Maghrib” (evening) prayers.
The holy month represents for Muslims the perfect occasion to spend a month being more spiritual and praying intensively “Taraweeh.”
Taraweeh prayers are a special type of prayer that can only be performed collectively in mosques after “Isha,” night-time prayers, and “Farj,” dawn prayers.
Ramadan festivities take different forms depending on different cultures, with celebrations often characterized by family, community gatherings, and charity.
Two years after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Muslim worshipers can finally perform Taraweeh prayers in mosques.
The end of Ramadan is religiously and culturally significant as it coincides with Eid Al Fitr.
On Eid Al Fitr Muslim communities in Turkey and elsewhere celebrate the day with special foods and family visits after performing the morning prayers.
Social distancing measures made it harder for Muslim communities to celebrate Eid Al Fitr and Ramadan over the past two years.
