Raja Athletic Club’s former Belgian coach Marc Wilmots has recently said that “social media is a poison in Morocco.”

The “Green Club” sacked the coach on February 20, after only three months as green eagles’ trainer.

Raja’s ex-coach said he was already discussing an offer from another club, according to Belgian outlet Het Belang van Limburg.

Wilmots won four games, drew five times, and lost once during his three-month stay with Casablanca’s Raja.

Of his dismissal, Wilmots claimed it was utterly political in reference to some issues inside the club’s board.

At the beginning of November 2021, there were three presidential candidates, he said, stressing that the chairman won with 70% of the vote, he told Belgian media. Wilmots explained that the two losers “started conspiring and seizing every opportunity to establish the tone [for their favor].”

Social media had a great influence in establishing Wilmots’ negative reputation, the coach said. “In Moroccan society, social media is a major poison,” he insisted, adding that it “has more power than anyone else in Morocco.”

Wilmot’s dismissal came after a 1-0 win over Algeria’s ES Setif in the Champions League. He said that “this is proof that his efforts’ evaluation had nothing to do with the outcome.”

Wilmots is already talking to a new employer since he sensed his resignation coming, he added, preferring not to spare details to the media, saying “I won’t tell you too much about it yet.”

Wilmots will spend a few months in Morocco with his wife and children as part of the celebration of his 53rd birthday. “Morocco is a great country,” Wilmots said.

The coach led Casablanca’s Raja to successfully earn a six-out-of-six points, with the Green Eagles ranking first place in group B of the African Champions League.
