Rabat – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita is attending today the 35th annual Ordinary Session of the African Union in Addis Ababa on behalf of King Mohammed VI.

With the participation of heads of states from all African Union member countries, the assembly is taking place in the union’s headquarters in Ethiopia.

The 2022 annual assembly is held under the theme “Building Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent: Strengthen Agriculture, Accelerate the Human Capital, Social and Economic Development.”

During the session, the assembly will oversee the appointment of several AU positions. The AU organization will appoint a female vice president for the Pan African University Council.

Other new appointments will also include 15 members of the Peace and Security Council (PSC), the AU’s conflict management and prevention organ, a female member of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) from Africa’s northern region, panel members, and a CEO to the AUDA-NEPAD.

The two-day event will also see the AU member states deliberate on a number of issues pertaining to the continent’s current and emerging challenges, including the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on Africa’s socio-economic landscape.

African state representatives will consider a number of reports comprising recommendations on policy making and the best practices to boost intercontinental cooperation.

Morocco officially returned to the African Union in 2017, and the country has since been dubbed as an essential continental leader and a shaper of a new trend of innovation-driven pan-Africanism.

In January 2022, the North African country was elected to the African Union Security and Peace Council for a three-year mandate.

In recent years, Morocco has heavily invested in strengthening political and diplomatic ties on the African continent.

Fostering a spirit of cooperation with African countries is at the heart of Morocco’s pro-market transformation approach to become a gateway to Africa, and the continent’s economic powerhouse.
