Rabat – Rescue operations are well into their third consecutive day to pull five-year-old Rayane out of the 32-meter deep well. Social media is flooded with tweets, hashtags, and prayers for young Rayane to return safely to his parents.

Amidst the prayers, social media users are showing solidarity by all means possible, with Houssain Mohammed Hijaz, a Saudi businessman, tweeting to offer Rayane’s parents free flight tickets and hotel rooms for an “Umra,” a visit to the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

The tweet text reads: “الطفل_ريان# (the child Rayane) Hijazy group takes the initiative to offers a Oumra and (covering flight and hotel costs) for Rayane’s parents, we ask of the all mighty God to accept our deeds and we wish for Rayane’s parents to contact us to see this scheme through.”

Three hours later, the businessman tweeted again: “It’s as if the whole world is trapped in that hole #الطفل_ريان #ريان #ريان_شفشاون #ريان_المغرب #الطفل_المغربي_ريان” followed by a broken heart emoji.

كأن العالم بأسره عالقًا في هذه الحفرة?.

Amid the tragedy, national and international news outlets are following closely the rescue efforts as the vast operation treads carefully to avoid risking the life of Rayane.

#انقذوا_ريان (#SaveRayan) is the number one hashtag tweeted today in Morocco with over 170K tweets.

Heartbreaking footage emerged earlier today showing Rayane sitting alone in the dark hole, while unable to reach the child through the narrow hole, rescue operations have delivered food and water to Rayane.

At the time of writing, vertical digging in parallel with the hole has come to an end. The intensive rescue operations have commenced horizontal digging in an attempt to pull out the child intact.

As rescue operations get closer to the location of the child, efforts are more focused on digging a tunnel without causing any landslides that might endanger the health of Rayane.
