Rabat – The highly anticipated AFCON quarter-finals game between Morocco and Egypt is finally here.

Millions of viewers around the world are tuning in for the AFCON match that will see Egypt and Morocco go head to head for the first time in the quarterfinal since the 2017 AFCON when Egypt’s Pharaohs beat Morocco’s Atlas Lions 3-1 at the same stage of the tournament.

Today’s game is the perfect chance for the Atlas Lions to take their revenge and sustain their dream of ending more than three decades of trophy drought.

Topping Group C, Morocco landed its place in the AFCON quarter-finals after defeating Malawi 2-1. For its part, Egypt finished second in Group D and made it to today’s game by beating Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties in probably the most anticipated round of 16 games in this year’s AFCON.

In his pre-match press conference on Saturday, Morocco’s national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic said today’s “game will be a battle of tactics between two teams well acquainted with each other.”

Morocco has only won the AFCON once, and that was a very long time ago — in 1976. Meanwhile, Egypt has won the continental trophy 7 times — more than any other team.

But today’s game will be a confrontation between Egypt’s more illustrious past and Morocco’s better prospects in the current tournament. Even as the Egyptian team features Mohamed Salah, arguably the best player in the world in recent months, Morocco’s team has been far better collectively in the past year.

As many put them among the biggest favorites — alongside Senegal and Cameroon — to win the title this year, Morocco’s Atlas Lions still have to get the better of an increasingly confident Egyptian team that has just eliminated Cote d’Ivoire, another big favorite.

And since the last time Morocco made it to the semifinals was in 2004, today’s game is also an opportunity to once and for all chase the demons of underwhelming  AFCON performances.

When to tune in for the game

Taking place in the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital city, the game is kicking off today at 4 p.m Moroccan time.
