Rabat – The 31st annual 100% off-road rally for women will take place this year between March 18 and April 2 in the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

Dubbed “The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles,” the event was created in 1990 and remains the largest women motorsport rally.

As participation in the competition is open to amateurs and professionals alike, winning the title depends on traversed distance rather than speed.

In a statement, Dominique Serra, the founder of the rally, said she ventured to create the event to highlight women’s potential to practice and contest in a sport mostly regarded as the preserve of men.

The event has garnered much attention over the years, and it has received the Coat of Arms of Morocco from King Mohammed VI.

Aiming to promote social causes beyond the thrill, the event introduced the first 100% electric vehicles category in 2018.

The event reached a significant milestone in 2006 as more than 100 teams from around the world competed for the ultimate title.

International teams have already signed up for the event, with the only fully American team announcing their participation.

Aside from the adrenaline rush, women often join the competition with humanitarian agendas. The American team signing up for the 2022 event announced yesterday that they’ll use the event’s platform to raise awareness about anxiety among teenagers.

The event also includes fundraising initiatives that will go to Mountain Valley Treatment Centre in Plainfield.

Val Rothen and Thelma Maguire, the two members of the American team, told the Conway Daily Sun that they’ll be competing under the name of Pyxis Rose, the same name of the organizations they founded to raise funds for their program to help children and young adults facing “debilitating anxiety and depression.”
