Rabat- A new conservatory will open its doors in Rabat by 2022, the National Higher Conservatory of Music and Choreography of Rabat announced in a statement on December 30.

Set to be located in front of the Rabat-Agdal train station, the conservatory projects to welcome the teaching staff and students in the coming weeks. But the exact opening date has not been confirmed yet.

The National Institute for Music and Dance in Rabat, which is currently located in Agdal, will also move to the new building once it opens.

There are currently 31 music conservatories operating in Morocco. The most prominent is the one in Rabat.

In recent weeks, the Ministry of Culture and Communication has appeared to be giving more attention to art in general, and music conservatories especially, as part of a new strategy to boost artistic and musical training in Morocco.

The Ministry has launched many initiatives aiming to provide aid to Morocco’s cultural sector amid economic fallout of the COVID-19 crisis.

In 2020, Morocco’s Ministry of Culture announced that it will finance 459 artistic projects.

The goal is to support the various actors in the fields of theater, music, song, choreography, and visual arts, amid the COVID-19 crisis, it said.

Out of 459 projects, 146 are relating to music, songs, and choreography with a budget of MAD 14 million ($1.51 million).

The Ministry also gave new authorizations for 15 private musical conservatories across the country.

In addition to this, nine new music conservatories opened in Morocco in 2020; namely in Khenifra, El Kelaa Des Sraghna, Khouribga, El Jadida, Al Hoceima, Fnideq, Ouezzane, Martil, Taza, Tiznit and Taounate.
