Fez – The Moroccan Union of American Football (UNMFA) has announced that the first edition of the American Football championship will officially kick off on January 9, 2022.
After several months of preparations, the championship has six matches scheduled on the first day at the Moulay Rachid sports complex in Rabat.
By this competition, UNFMA wants to promote this sport that has gained much interest in Morocco. The first day’s program will be divided into two categories: three games in the men’s competitions and three games in women’s competitions.
The competition will be played in the flag style of football. This is a non-contact and less aggressive version of American Football in which the defending team must remove a flag attached to the ballcarrier’s clothing instead of tackling them to stop the play.
Meanwhile, the UNMFA is also preparing to launch a more traditional version of American Football, also known as tackle football, in February 2022. The tackle version includes physical contact. One of the game’s main moves is to tackle and force the opponent to the ground to stop the play from continuing.

Introducing tackle football requires the UNFMA to prepare all facilities and equipment necessary to ensure the players’ safety. UNFMA was created earlier this year with the aim of managing the sport, launching a national championship, and representing Morocco in international events.
Morocco’s American Football institution has been in full preparations for several months creating a structural foundation for this sport that has caught Moroccans attention. American Football has many Moroccan enthusiasts and national clubs emerging each year.
Since 2012, this sport has attracted players who dream of a professional career in this field. However, many Moroccan American-style football teams suffer from problems related to lack of resources, equipment, and infrastructure or logistics.
