Fez – Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, announced on November 10 that the country will host the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The meetings are scheduled to be held in Marrakech in October 2022.

The minister made her announcement during a work session with the Vice-President of the World Bank in the Middle East and North Africa region, Ferid Belhaj, currently on a visit to Morocco.

The IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings were originally scheduled to take place in Marrakech in October 2021 but were later postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 Annual Meetings took place virtually on October 11-17 in Washington DC.

“We discussed the preparations for the organization, in Marrakech in October 2022, of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF,” Minister Alaoui said, adding that Morocco reaffirmed its commitment and desire “to succeed in this event.”

Organizing the event is an opportunity for Morocco “to strengthen [its] regional and international influence,” said the Minister at the end of the working session.

The designation of Morocco to host one of the world’s leading economic and financial events came after a long process of evaluation of applications. The North African kingdom was selected in 2018 to organize this high-level event.

The World Bank Group and the IMF Annual Meetings are the most important annual gatherings in international finance. The event constitutes a ground to examine the global situation, economic development and funding, and the struggle against poverty and financial injustice worldwide.

The meetings traditionally gather central bank governors, finance and development ministers, private sector executives, civil society representatives, the media, and academics from around the world over several days.

The event’s panels tackle a variety of topics revolving around the global economic outlook, global financial stability, poverty alleviation, inclusive economic growth and job creation, and climate change, among others.
