Rabat – Morocco’s security services dismantled on Tuesday an active drug trafficking network in the city of Tangier.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) announced that police seized 29,423 ecstasy and Rivotril pills during the raid.
DGSN announced the arrest of eight people with alleged links to the network.
Police also seized knives, a rented car, and “a large sum of cash” in national currency, which is suspected to be from drug trafficking.
Police put the suspect in custody for further investigation to determine the circumstances of the case and arrest additional accomplices.
Rivotril, also called clonazepam, is used as a sedative to decrease seizures or anxiety.
The medicine is only prescribed by doctors.
The excessive use of the medication can lead users to experience personality changes.
Ecstasy pills, meanwhile, are composed of MDMA, a chemical that affects the central nervous system, causing hallucinations and psychoactive effects.
In 2020, police arrested 97,564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking and seized 476,923 psychotropic tablets.
Security operations allowed police to also seize 132,167 kilograms of cocaine, 8.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 217 tonnes of cannabis and its derivatives.
