Rabat – Security services in Nador, in Morocco’s Oriental region, dismantled on Tuesday an international drug trafficking network.
The dismantling of the network took place with the active collaboration of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), said a statement.
The statement, issued by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), said that DGST provided police with essential data on the network.
Coordinated police interventions subsequently made it possible to arrest two suspects in two different operations, the statement added.
Police arrested one of the suspects in the act of transferring nearly six kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of heroin onboard a vehicle.
A second operation led to the arrest of another suspect, with the police saying that the man was suspected of being the transporter who handled the trafficking of large quantities of drugs seized on board a fishing boat off the Spanish enclave of Melilla.
After preliminary investigations, police identified two houses belonging to the main suspect who was attempting to flee Morocco.
The operation resulted in the seizure of two cars and an unidentified large sum of money in Moroccan dirhams and Euros.
The police statement said the money might have come from drug trafficking.
Additional investigations established that the activity of the network extends to several European countries, including the Netherlands and Spain.
DGSN’s statement noted that hard drugs are usually transported on board boats towards the coast before being handed over to transporters working on board a small-scale fishing boat to introduce them into Moroccan territory.
Police put the suspects in custody for further investigations to throw more light on the case and in hopes of identifying all the accomplices of the two arrested suspects.
The news comes as Morocco intensifies its fight against drug trafficking.
In 2020, DGSN services seized 217 tonnes and 323 kilograms of cannabis, representing an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.
In the same year, police also arrested 97, 564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking cases.
