Officials Cite ‘Health Situation’ as El Al Suspends Morocco-Israel Flights

El Al was one of three Israeli airlines to announce the commencement of routes between Morocco and Israel after the two signed a “normalization agreement” in late 2020. Israir commenced flights during the same period as El Al, while Arkia also announced intentions to begin flights after the re-establishment of ties.

Denver – Israeli airlines El Al has continued the suspension of its Tel-Aviv-Marrakech trips for the third week, less than two months after inaugurating the new route.

The flights, operated on a weekly round trip basis, were suspended on September 6, although the airline company has not yet issued any official explanation.

One source attributed the cancellation to the pandemic, informing local media “the health situation” was the reason for the abrupt closure.

However, data indicated both Israel and Morocco were steadily progressing in their fight against COVID-19, with both countries making significant improvements in recent weeks. El Al has remained silent on the situation, refusing to clarify the reason for the suspension or when normal flights between the two countries would resume.

The Israeli airline opened the route linking Tel Aviv to Marrakech in late July, after the signing of a historical normalization agreement opened the door for direct travel between Israel and Morocco. While its route from Tel Aviv to Marrakech remained closed for the time being, a second route linking Tel Aviv to the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca remains operational.

El Al was one of three Israeli airlines to announce the commencement of routes between Morocco and Israel after the two signed a “normalization agreement” in late 2020. Israir commenced flights during the same period as El Al, while Arkia also announced intentions to begin flights after the re-establishment of ties.

The inauguration of flights between the two countries was heralded by many earlier this year as a historical moment of Israel-Arab relations. Officials from the US stated the move indicated the beginning of “improved relations” between the two counties, and the normalization agreement has also led to the introduction of diplomatic offices in both countries, officiating political relations and opening the door for new economic opportunities.
