Rabat – Abdelouahed El-Ansari from the Istiqlal Party (PI) was elected on Wednesday as the new president of the Council of the Fes-Meknes region.
The experienced politician, who was the only candidate for the Presidency of the region, obtained the vote of 61 members out of the 69 on the council. Five members abstained from voting.
Nine Vice-Presidents of the council were also elected, including: Younes Rafik of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Abdelhak Abou Salem of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Halim Zoumi (PI), Youssef Hadhoum (PI), Hakima Belksaoui (RNI), Khadija Al-Hajoubi (PAM), Jaouad Lagnaoui (RNI), Fatima Zahra Slassi (RNI), and Khadija Adria (PAM).
The Regional Council of Fez-Meknes consists of 69 seats, with a majority of 21 seats represented by the RNI. Following are the PI with 14 seats, the PAM with 11, the Popular movement (MP) with 7, and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) with 6.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) and the Constitutional Union have three seats each, ahead of two other political parties, the Front des Forces Democratiques (FFD) and the Justice and Development Party, which have only two seats each.
El-Ansari, was also elected in March as the head of the Moroccan Bar Association (ABAM) for a three-year term (2021-2024).
