Denver- Algeria is continuing its unjustified attacks against Morocco during a meeting of Arab League members in Cairo Thursday.
Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra continued Algeria’s perpetual interference into Morocco’s internal affairs and delivered baseless claims regarding the renormalization of ties between Morocco and Israel. He accused Morocco of harming Algeria “by establishing dangerous alliances with the sole aim of achieving immediate gains to the detriment of the noble objectives of the system of common Arab action.”
Lamamra continued his accusations with the notion that Morocco “is allied with the Zionist entity to undermine the interests of Algeria.”
Algeria has repeatedly voiced its opposition to the resumption of ties between Israel and Morocco. Earlier this month, the Algerian Minister of Communication stated the country was “the subject of a real and systematic war from several parties, foremost of which is the Moroccan-Zionist alliance.”
The latest Algerian accusations (which are mostly targeted at a domestic audience in Algeria) come just weeks after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune accused Morocco of helping to start wildfires that ravaged the Algerian countryside.
Algeria cut ties with Morocco shortly after the wildfires, although the country has presented no evidence indicating Morocco had any involvement in the tragic event.
Many allege Algeria’s recent hostile behavior against Morocco to be a commonly used scapegoating tactic. The Algerian political establishment has often used Morocco as a diversion to avoid domestic issues and to direct public anger at a foreign target. With rising unemployment, and the mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Algerian political officials are now turning to Morocco as the source of the nation’s woes.
