Rabat – Morocco is set to participate in the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, in early September.

The Cairo championship, which will the 46th iteration of the event, will run between September 1-5 at the newly constructed cycling velodrome – part of the Cairo International Stadium in Nasr City. It will be the first time that the championship will happen in the country, with the Egyptian Cycling Federation presiding over the event.

Morocco will be one of the 43 countries participating in the event, sending five athletes to the championship. The Moroccan delegation will be led by Abdelati Saadoune, with Mohamed Hagchi, Zakaria Laktabni, Hassane Dhimane, Alae Aziki and Mohamed Najib Sanbouli participating in the events. 

The Moroccan cyclists will participate in 10 competitions in total, namely, the sprint, the one kilometer time trial, keirin, team sprint, team pursuit, individual pursuit, omnium, scratch race, point race, and elimination. 

Competitions are welcome to join the official training sessions that will run in the venue between Saturday, August 28, and Tuesday, August 31. The sessions will go on from 09:00 to 19:30, with each group getting a one and a half hour slot for training. The official training schedule is yet to be published.

Training sessions will continue throughout the competition, with the track being kept open at least two hours every day prior to the start of the competition. The training sessions will be open to all participants of the event. Additionally, there will also be tracks open for warm-up, an hour before the competitions begin, which will be for athletes competing in the upcoming session only.

“The 2021 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships presents an exceptionally good opportunity for all of us in the worldwide cycling family to once again celebrate the future of our sport by celebrating our Junior athletes,” Mohamed Wagih Azzam, the President of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2021 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships, wrote in a press statement.
