Rabat – Even if most couples have put real-life ceremonies on the back burner due to COVID-19, among the people dreaming of getting married abroad, Morocco is the top wedding destination for wedding planners.

A UK-based credit comparison company, Money, compiled a report on the latest wedding trends and aspirations using data pulled from Pinterest, a social image sharing platform. The company looked at top destinations, themes, and types of dresses.

Morocco ranked first for destinations, outranking famous dream destinations such as Greece (second), Italy (fourth), and Bali (sixth).

Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, colorful decor, and patterns — such as the famed Zellige tile-work — have earned the North African country the top spot. Wedding planners and dreamers pinned Morocco in 1,001 Pinterest boards.

Greece, with its plethora of islands and monasteries, comes in a close second, with 1,000 pins, only one behind Morocco. France trails closely behind the “birthplace of democracy,” with 999 pins, indicating that France’s reputation as a destination for love and romance still stands strong.

Reflecting Europe’s popularity for destination weddings, Italy takes fourth place, with 998 pins. Italy has a plethora of breath-taking destinations for those who want to get married with a view, such as the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Sicily, or Sardinia.

Rounding out the top five, Mexico is the most vied-for Latin American destination. With its staggering biodiversity, from spanning deserts in the North to its thick jungle and breath-taking mountains in the South.

Traditionally, Moroccan weddings lasted seven days, either in the form of separate bride’s and groom’s families’ parties, or one big joint party with both families celebrating together. Today, the weddings last “only” three days, due to constraints of modern-day living.

There is also a dedicated hammam day — a type of Moroccan bath/sauna —  where women clean and prepare their bodies before the bride meets her groom, followed by a henna party. Friends and family decorate the bride’s legs and arms with temporary henna art, to wish her the best of luck in the new chapter of her life.

While most travel might be on pause at the moment, once borders reopen, any couple that wishes for a memorable wedding off the beaten track, Morocco makes itself an ideal destination.
