Rabat – In a joint effort to highlight Hassani cultural heritage, Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and the Phosboucraa Foundation will organize a conference-debate on December 18 in Paris on the influence of the Moroccan Sahara on the work of French author and poet, Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Under the theme “Antoine de Saint Exupery and the wisdom of the sands,” the event will take place in the Arab World Institute in Paris.

The symposium will be held in cooperation with the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation. It is an opportunity to feature “the magical universe of Moroccan Sahara and Hassani cultural heritage, the source of inspiration of the aviator,” according to a statement by the foundation.

The event will include three main activities, including a conference-debate supervised by four authors: Jean-Pierre Gueno, Frederic Coconnier, Thomas Fraisse and Morocco’s Fouad Laroui. This activity will be followed by a concert led by the Moroccan Sahrawi diva Oum and Mnat Aichata, a Hassani musical band.

Saint Exupéry found inspiration for his novella The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) in the southern Moroccan city of Tarfaya. This work is one of the most-translated masterpieces in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. The novella was translated into 300 languages and dialects, selling nearly 2 million copies annually.

The cultural event is highly supported by the Phosboucraa Foundation and CNDH. “The initiative forms part of a long-term vision of cultural programming aimed at making Antoine de Saint Exupery’s Saharan adventure dynamic of animation and territorial development of the southern regions of Morocco, regions with strong potentials,” added the statement.
