Rabat – 28,000 people have been arrested during the month of August alone, the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) revealed in a release on Sunday.

The national security agency said the people in question were arrested between August 1 and 18 over suspicion of having committed criminal acts.

7,578 of the arrested were subject of national search warrants for criminal offenses and felonies. The release stated they have been placed under preventive detention as per orders by the public prosecutions.

20,944 were arrested while committing a crime: 7,075 for possession or selling of drugs and psychotropic substances, and 1,655 for committing physical assault, carrying blades, and robbery.

The remaining suspects were arrested for sex crimes, public drunkenness, driving under the influence of alcohol, and committing economic crimes.

DGSN said that people who sell hallucinogenic drugs were targeted in particular because those drugs are the source of several criminal acts associated with violence.

The national security agency affirmed that 93,808 psychotropic pills and 803 kilograms of cannabis resin were seized. The number of suspects arrested for carrying blades was 1,327.

982 blades were seized during these operations, which DGSN affirmed they will continue in various Moroccan cities to combat crime.
