Rabat – Famous Syrian singer Asala Nassri was arrested in Beirut’s Rafic Hariri airport on Sunday for carrying cocaine in her make-up bag, reported Arab media.

Assala, one of the most renowned female Arab singers, was headed to Cairo when she was arrested for possession of 2g of cocaine. Security sources later suggested that the quantity of drugs seized, indicated it was for personal use.

The Syrian diva denied the cocaine was hers and claimed somebody else had put in her bag.

News of the singer’s arrest went viral as the incident occurred during Eid Al-Fitr, the celebrations marking the end of Ramadan.

Following her arrest, Assala posted a picture on Instagram, saying “Thank God”.

When questioned by forces, Assala claimed that the incident was intended undermine her reputation because of her political stances.

The singer is known for being against the current Syrian regime, and this has caused problems within her own family, since some of her relatives support Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.
