By Hajar Elkahlaoui

Rabat – A tragic house fire has claimed the lives of three children in Rabat. Two survivors, Hiba and Amira, were rushed to Ibn Sina hospital with third-degree burns. However, hospital officials confirmed that the two girls succumbed to their burns.

The fire broke out at 10pm on Wednesday in the “Rachad” neighborhood in Rabat, first claiming the life of Hajar, eight-years-old, and now those of her sisters.

Neighbours rushed to save the girls and successfully brought the two to safety, but they were unable to rescue Hajar’s as she was hiding in the closet.

In a video by the Moroccan news outlet Soltana, the deceased’s mother tearfully explains that she begs in Rabat to support her family, meaning she had to leave the girls alone for long periods of time.

The neighbours who intervened complained about the Civil Protection elements’ service, as they personally had to enter the house and take the girls to the hospital in a taxi.

In a Hespress video report, the neighbours said that “the fire brigade only arrived about two hours later.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Police believe a phone charger was a likely source, although the mother told reporters that she has no electricity in her house.

An investigation is still underway to determine the causes of the incident.
