Rabat – Spanish-Moroccan football player Achraf Hakimi continues to pique the interest of major European football clubs, most recently Bayern Munich.

Well into the second year of Hakimi’s loan from Real Madrid to Borussia Dortmund, Bayern has “inquired” with Real about the possibility of signing Hakimi, reported Spanish football outlet Marca on January 5.

The 21-year-old could move to the top Bundesliga club instead of returning to Madrid at the end of his loan in the summer of 2020. While Achraf Hakimi’s Dortmund currently ranks fourth in the German Bundesliga, Bayern ranks first, a position the club has maintained for seven championships in a row.

Hakimi, who also plays with Morocco’s national Atlas Lions team, has improved his game during his time with Borussia. While playing in multiple defense positions with Borussia, he scored six goals in over 26 games.

Hakimi earned multiple accolades in recent weeks for his Borussia performance, including Young Arab Player of the Year. A Moroccan newspaper focused on the Atlas Lions also named him the “Golden Lion” of 2019.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) included Hakimi in its shortlist for Young African Player of 2019. CAF will announce the winner on Tuesday, January 7.

The defender plays in the left back for the Atlas Lions but is more comfortable in the right back position, Marca notes. At Real Madrid, the right back position is occupied by Dani Carvajal, possibly making Real more interested in loaning out Hakimi again this summer when his Borussia loan ends.

Real Madrid’s contract with Achraf Hakimi continues until the summer of 2022. Any move by Achraf Hakimi will need to be approved by the Spanish giant.

In an interview with El Pais last year, Hakimi said that moving to Germany has been beneficial to him. “I think it has helped me to mature and grow.”

The year 2020 will also bring new growth to Hakimi, who is set to become a father soon. Hakimi announced his partner Hiba Abouk’s pregnancy in October.
