Fez, April 5, 2012

In April and May of this year, SOS Youth Association will launch an initiative, the “Sahara Convoy”, to sensitize Moroccan youth about one of their country’s top issues, the Moroccan Sahara. Under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, the convoy will start in Tangier and cover other cities such as Oujda, Fez, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Agadir and end in Laayoune. Part of a parallel framework of promoting diplomacy and raising awareness, the initiative will target 400,000 Moroccan youth and seek to raise one million signatures for the Moroccan Sahara cause.

The head of the convoy, Mr. Mohammed Akiam, stated that “the purpose of this convoy is to sensitize the younger generation to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, to link it to the values of the Green March and include it in the unified national spirit to develop Morocco and enhance its stability.”

Regarding the substance of the convoy, Mr. Akiam indicated that workshops will be organized in order to educate participants on various aspects on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. Topics will include historical timelines, conditions of refugees in the Tindouf camps, as well as the autonomy proposal which Morocco has presented in 2007.

Participants will benefit from national artistic evenings, screening of videos, films and documentaries about the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. The convoy hopes to raise one million Moroccan signatures that will be submitted in a letter format to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

In April 2007, Morocco presented an Autonomy Plan that was described as “serious and credible” by the Security Council. The said plan proposes significant autonomy for the Sahara with a local government and a parliament, within the Moroccan sovereignty.
