Taroudant, Morocco, May 20, 2012

Fadel Shaker, the Arab pop star, used Mawazine Festival as a platform to call for the overthrow of Bashar El-Assad.

On the second day of the 10th edition of the Mawazine Festival, the Lebanese singe urged the public attending his concert to repeat after him “amen,” while praying for the end of the Bashar Al Assad’s rule over Syria.

“Allah yakhdu” he said during the concert, which means May God take him away, referring to Bashar Al-Assad.

This is the first time in the history of the Festival that a singer uses it as a platform to defend his/her political leanings.

It is worth mentioning that Fadel Shaker was shot kissing the head of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir during an anti-Assad Salafi rally in Beirut on Sunday March 4, 2012.

More than a year after the start of the Syrian revolution, Bashar Al Assad seems more determined than ever to cling to his power and crackdown on the opposition.

The Syrian uprising has claimed the lives of over 12,000 people and left more than 50,000 wounded.

The UN and the Arab League efforts geared towards putting an end to the bloodshed were thwarted by Russia and China. The latter vetoed two Security Council resolutions, which were aiming at paving the way for tougher sanctions against the Syrian regime.
