Paris, July 30, 2012

Four instructors of a summer camp in the Paris region were suspended for having observed the Ramadan Fast, the French TV channel, TF1 reported on Sunday.

An official from the city council of Gennevilliers (Hauts de Seine) made a visit to the summer camps and reminded the instructors that, based on their employment contract, they had to eat and hydrate properly.

“We received a visit by the head of the summer camps. He came to see if everything went well with children, and this was the case. Then he came to have lunch with us. He sat at my table and noticed that Moussa and I were not eating,” Salim, one of the instructors, was quoted by TF1 as saying.

The reason brandished by the city council to justify their dismissal of the two instructors was that by no eating and drinking water, they could jeopardize their ability to fully discharge their responsibility in taking care of the children in the summer camp.

They “did not comply with the obligations of their employment contract, and could jeopardize the physical safety of the children they were in charge of,” said the city council of Gennevilliers in a statement.

“This lack of nutrition and hydration could cause these agents to be no longer in full possession of the means required to ensure the smooth and safe operations of the summer camp, and the physical safety of children,” the statement added.
