The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine fisheries confirmed that the offer of sheep and goats, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, will be enough to meet the anticipated demand.
The ministry said in a statement that the supply of sheep and goats destined for slaughter during the coming Eid al-Adha is estimated at approximately 7.5 million cattle; 4.5 million male lambs and 3 million goats and ewes.
Despite the drought and hard juncture that marked the last agricultural season in addition to the higher prices of feedstuff, ranchers and professionals in the sector were able to provide enough cattle that will meet the anticipated demand.
The number of sheep and goats largely covers the demand, assured the Ministry.
Sheep meat production has increased by 2%, nearly 450,000 tons in 2012, the statement added.
The ministry assured consumers that the health status of animals is “very satisfactory” in all regions of the Kingdom through programs of surveillance and prophylactic campaigns conducted by the veterinary services under l’Office National de Sécurité Sanitaire des produits Alimentaires (ONSSA), National Office for Food Safety.
