Morocco World News with Maghreb Intelligence

Rabat, January 23, 2013

While three years ago, the Kingdom of Morocco and France were the breeding ground for espionage operations conducted by agents of the Department of Intelligence and Security (DRS) outside the territory, the situation has radically changed.

With impressive financial and logistical resources, but no human resources infinitely expandable, the DRS led for over twenty years by General Mohamed Mediène Aka Tewfik -a Cuban cigar and NBA enthusiast – has refocused its activities under the external pressure of the “Arab Spring.”

In Delly-Brahim, headquarter of the DRS, meetings continue between Generals Rachid Laalali aka “Attafi,” boss of the Direction of Documentation and External Security, and Bashir Tartag aka “Othman,” boss of the Direction of Counter Espionage (DCE) in order to compensate for the lack that is felt on the ground in Morocco and France.

Human resources of the DRS were reallocated in Tunisia, Libya and the Sahel. The analysis center of the Algerian services had reclassified the areas of risks which were threatening Algeria.

The absence of intelligence structure in Libya after the fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was seen as a serious threat by the DRS.

According to informed sources in Algiers, Tunisia has also become a serious problem for Algerian authorities. The fact that Ennahda’s Islamists are very present in the structures of the Tunisian government has also scalded generals.

The DDSE and DCE, which oddly also have relays abroad, withdrew many of their active agents in France and Morocco to reassign them in Libya, Tunisia and the Sahel. Today, the DRS’ analysts noted a scarcity of “information” from the Kingdom of Morocco and the Hexagon, which has led to demand more resources to continue feeding the “thread” from Rabat and Paris.

A supplementary budget will soon be given to the DRS to strengthen the HC mesh in both countries and thus compensate for the deficiencies.
