After scoring an amazing brace in England’s victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Harry Kane has once again proved himself on football’s biggest stage.
The England captain’s outstanding performance has intensified the race for the 2026 Golden Boot, with football fans around the world wondering whether he can finish as the tournament’s top scorer for a second time to be the first player ever to win the Golden Boot twice.
Kane’s two goals against Congo were another reminder to the football world of Harry’s finishing ability and that he is among the world’s top strikers.
Kane’s remarkable World Cup journey has also earned the admiration of those closest to him.
England teammate Anthony Gordon recently described the striker’s campaign as one “that has only ever been surpassed by Lionel Messi, the greatest footballer of all time.”
While this compliment reflects Gordon’s opinion, it underlines the level at which Kane has been performing and why many believe he is capable of making World Cup history once again.
The race for the Golden Boot has intensified as the tournament enters its knockout stages. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé currently lead the ranking with six goals each, while Harry Kane and Erling Haaland are close behind on five.
If Kane finishes the tournament as the leading scorer, he will become the first player ever in FIFA World Cup history to win the Golden Boot on two separate occasions, in 2018 with 6 goals and in 2026, a milestone that would strengthen his legacy on football’s biggest stage.
With England still chasing their second World Cup title, Kane will have more opportunities to add to his goal tally.
Whether he wins the Golden Boot or not, his performance against Congo has already proved to the world that Kane is among the best strikers in modern football, if not the best.
