CAIRO – Military prosecutors accuse the defendants of inciting and assisting in the killing of citizens. They are also accused of torching three churches and five military vehicles.
The military trial of 64 members of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Gamaa Islamiya group began on Tuesday in the canal city of Suez.
Military prosecutors accuse the defendants of inciting and assisting in the killing of citizens. They are also accused of torching three churches and five military vehicles.
Suez, like a number of provinces across Egypt, was gripped by violence last month after security forces in Cairo and Giza violently dispersed two major protests staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
The bloody dispersals left several hundred dead and many others injured.
The defendants were referred to a military court where they face charges relating to recent attacks on security personnel and facilities.
Other Morsi supporters charged with involvement in last month’s violence, meanwhile, are currently being tried in a civilian court.
