Sidi Ifni- Last week, the Canadian Parliament in Quebec has given a family the freedom to express their xeno- and islamophobia during a board meeting. Organized by a committee of the National Assembly in Montreal, this public hearing debated the issue of the Charter of Values in Canada.
The Canadian family called on Parliament to give them the right to express their anti-Moroccan racism and islamophobia. During the assembly, the family identified their most ‘despicable’ words: Morocco, customs, Islam, and Muslims.
Geneviève Caron said she was taken aback by her visit to a mosque on her trip to Morocco.
“We were told to remove our shoes as we were entering a mosque,” Geneviève said. “What do you mean? Why do we need to do this?” she asked.
Commenting on the relationship between men and women in Morocco, she said, “Women are separated from men by a curtain.”
Her husband Pineault attested that a Moroccan approached him and asked him to uphold the Muslim faith.
“There were too many minarets where muezzins chant several times a day, which is highly annoying,” he said.
The draft of Quebec’s Charter of Values prohibits all religious symbols for government employees, including the Christian crucifix, Jewish kippah, and Islamic headscarf.
The bill, which has divided Quebec society further mandates that providing or receiving state services must also comply.
