Participation of Israeli artist in Marrakech Biennale stirs controversy

Casblanca- Held every two years in Morocco’s Red City, the Marrakech Biennale is a Moroccan festival that promotes inter-cultural and inter-artistic exchange. This year, the Southern Pearl  city will host the fifth edition of this festival.

Marrakech will host the fifth edition of the Marrakech Biennale from February 23 to March 30. Many international artists from all corners of the world will take part in this event.

This year’s edition of the festival will include three artistic categories: visual arts, literature, film and video.

The Israeli artist Keren Cytter is among the artists who will participate in the Visual Arts category.

But Cytter’s presence in this event “seems to bother those who speak out against the normalization of relations with the Jewish state, even artistically.”

In a statement to the daily Akhbar Al Yaoum on February 6, the Secretary General of the Moroccan Observatory against normalization, Aziz Hannaoui, said that “Cytter is from Tel Aviv, which means that she is an Israeli, and hosting her in Morocco is normalization.’

Several comments expressing opposition to Sitter’s presence in Marrakech Biennale appeared in Moroccan social media, and some suggested that they were considering organizing a sit-in against the inclusion of “Israeli art” in the festival.

Maintaining balance between artistic disciplines and providing an international focus on Morocco’s burgeoning artistic scene are the two major principles of the Marrakech Biennale.

According to Marrakech Biennale’s official website, this event aims “to promote inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary exchanges through an educational approach that addresses art professionals, students and the general public.”
