Rabat – As part of its pro-active efforts to counter terrorist threats, the Central Bureau for Judiciary Investigations (BCIJ), under the general directorate of national territory, dismantled, on Tuesday, an eight-member terrorist cell operating in Tangiers, Bouznika, Khouribga and Taounate and which swore allegiance to the so-called calif of the “Islamic State,” the Interior Ministry announced in a statement.

According to the same source, field leaders from the said organization have coordinated with the head of the cell to accommodate ISIS fighters who had intensive training on explosive manufacturing and gang war in the camps of the organization, and were given foreign passports to form a squad in charge of leading a series of terrorist attacks in the Kingdom, according to a pre-established plan by ISIS in the Syrian and Iraqi territories.

In conformity with ISIS agenda, this project sought to murder security officers and attack sensitive sites in order to terrorize citizens and destabilize the country, said the source.

The investigations revealed ties between the cell members and former fighters of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, as well as the involvement, in the terrorist project against Morocco, of female members who were living in hot spot zones before swearing allegiance to ISIS.

The suspects will be brought to justice after the completion of the probe led under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
