Rabat – The construction of the second line of Casablanca tramway was launched early this month.

The 15-kilometer second line (T2) will run from Ain Diab to Ain Sebaa railway station via the El Fida and Derb Sultan districts.

“This line should serve Hermitage, Mers Sultan, Al Fida, Derb Kabir, Hay Al Amal, Hay Al Farah, Hay Tissir, Hay Jamal, Laayoune, Hay Massira, Hay Mohammadi, Dar Lamane, El Badr El Bassma and Ain Sbaa,” announced the deputy project owner of Casa Transport.

The same source added that the second line “eventually will serve a population estimated at 450,000 inhabitants.”

Line 1 services, which initially linked Sidi Moumen in the east with Ain Diab and the Facultés district in the west, will be extended for 2-kilometers to serve the districts of Laymoun, Florida, and Lissasfa.

The investment amount of the second tram line and the extension of the already-existing line 1 is set at 3.7 billion dirhams.

The project will be funded by the Casablanca Urban Commune, the Grand-Casablanca region, in addition to funds from France.

“The work of the second line will be ready by the end of 2018,” said Casa Transport.

The Casablanca Tramway network is expected to cover 110 kilometers by 2022.
