Rabat – The Secretary General of the Istiqlal party (PI) Hamid Chabat broke his promise that he would step down if his party fails to win the municipal and regional elections, which were held last Friday. He had given the promise earlier this year during a previous TV appearance.
The controversial PI leader has stressed that he will not resign even though his party has failed to win the municipal and regional elections.
“No secretary general resigns after failing in elections whose results were forged,” Hamid Chabat told daily Maroc Telegraph news website.
Chabat also replied to the Head of government Abdelilah Benkirane’s calls for him leader to keep his promise and step down.
“Benkirane has no right to intervene in the internal issue of the Istiqlal party. Only the party members have the right to discuss this topic,” Chabat explained.
He went on to add that the only mistake his party made was “entrusting the government to manage fair elections.”
Chabat stressed that the election results were “forged”, claiming that some citizens voted twice or more while others were banned from voting because of their political affiliations.
The former mayor of Fez deplored the Justice and Development Party (PJD)’s domination of last elections saying that, “for the first time in the history of Morocco, democracy has been assassinated.”
Meanwhile, Chabat said he wishes PJD the best of luck in the management of the Moroccan cities, adding that he hopes the party will keep the promises its leaders gave to citizens during the election campaign.
“They should be committed to the promises they made…And we will monitor that,” Chabat concluded.
