Morocco: Engineering Students Build First Moroccan Drone

Rabat – A group of engineering students has successfully built a Moroccan drone designed  for both civil and military use.

The drone, which is equipped with superior technology, allowing real-time transmissions of data to a ground operation center, was built by a group of PhD students at the National School of Electricity and Mechanics (ENSEM).

“The multi-function aircraft can be used to check on dam safety, filming movies and sports event or even to control borders,” Hicham Madroumi, Director of ENSEM was quoted by the daily Al Massae as saying

Hicham Madroumi went on to add that the performance tests were conducted successfully last month, ahead of the drone’s commercialization in June 2016.

ENSEM, which provides specialized training in Electronics, Mechanics, Computer Science and Industrial Engineering, has reached an agreement with the company SAGEM to market the drone, the paper reported.

Khalid Boukhdir, Research student and coordinator of the research team, said in a previous interview that the drone project started in 2004, following a doctorate thesis.

He also pointed out that the first prototype was manufactured in 2012, adding that several others were made afterwards.

“Meanwhile, the latest drone is unique and cannot be compared to the previous ones. This new one can be guided over 50 kilometers away,” he concluded.
