Rabat – Following the news that Sweden is on the verge of recognizing the so-called Sahrawi Republic (SADR), Morocco’s Foreign Minister Salah Eddine Mezouar reportedly held a meeting with his Swedish counterpart, Margot Wallström, on Tuesday, on the sideline of the 70th UN General Assembly in New York.
The information was revealed on the Wednesday issue of the London-based Arab speaking daily Al Quds Al-arabi newspaper.
The paper quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Salah Eddine Mezouar explained during the meeting that Stockholm will commit a “strategic mistake” if it approves the self-proclaimed SADR.
At the time of writing, no statement over the meeting has been issued by the Moroccan foreign minister’s office.
Meanwhile, Moroccan party leaders flew to Sweden on Wednesday, in a visit to the country as part of their efforts to convince the Nordic nation to refrain from recognizing the so-called SADR.
Al Quds Al-arabi said that Sweden’s capital could become the scene of a media and diplomatic war between Morocco and the Polisario Front, in the upcoming days.
Moroccan political leader’s visit to Sweden will coincide with Aminatou Haidar press conference on the Western Sahara in Stockholm.
On Wednesday, the deputy head of mission of the Swedish Embassy in Morocco Wiktoria Dagerås Wittboldt said in a statement that the “Swedish Government supports the United Nations’efforts” to resolve the territorial dispute
“It is good that the United Nations is making renewed efforts to find a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara conflict. We support the work of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Mr. Christopher Ross,” Wiktoria Dagerås Wittboldt said.
“The Swedish Government is currently conducting an internal review of its Western Sahara policy…Sweden has not recognized Western Sahara as an independent state,” the Swedish diplomat concluded.
