Rabat – With an investment of MAD 400 million, American auto manufacturer Delphi will open a new factory in Meknes, Morocco, according to a Maghreb Agence Press (MAP).

It will be Delphi’s fourth production plant in Morocco, after plants in Tangier and Kenitra. The plant, which will be operational in 2016, will allow for the creation of 3,500 employment, according to the Director of Regional Investment Center (CRI) in Meknes-Tafilalt, Hassan Bahi.

The plant will be built on 5 hectares in the Meknes Agropolis, which is already the site of a Japanese company that produces cable bundles for Yazaki automobile. Bahi highlighted that the new Delphi project “is important for Meknes, the region, and for Morocco.”

The director of CRI Meknes-Tafilalt underlined that the choice of Meknes was made after a search of several cities including Casablanca, Kenitra, Laarach, and Settat.

With three automobile production plants employing nearly 10,000 people in Morocco, Delphi is one of the first auto car operators in Morocco.

The group established its first factory in 1999 in Tangier. The factory, which extends over an area of 72.000 square meters, employs currently 4,500 people.

Its second factory was also built in Tangier in 2008. It produces different kind of cable bundles for various European auto manufacturers.

Delphi established its third factory in the Atlantic free zone of Kenitra, with a budget of MAD 300 million.

In addition to Delphi, Morocco hosts several cable bundle manufacturers, including Schlemmer and Leoni (Germany), Yazaki, Fujikura and Sumitomo (Japan), Lear (United States), Hirshmann (Austria) and others.

Delphi Automotive is a leading global technology company for automotive and commercial vehicle markets delivering solutions that help make vehicles safe, green and connected.

Headquartered in Gillingham, UK, Delphi operates technical centers, manufacturing sites, and customer support services in 33 countries. The group employs about 146,000 people worldwide.
