New York – According to British magazine Times Higher Education (THE), two Moroccan universities made the “Top 15” list of best universities in the Arab World.
The new THE “World University Rankings 2015-2016” published in January, listed the best higher education institutions in the world based on their core missions -– teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
THE ranked institutions in 22 countries in the Arab World. Morocco’s University of Marrakech Cadi Ayyad came in at 14th place and Mohammed V University of Rabat ranked in 15th place, making the “Top 15.”
Universities from eight countries in the MENA region ranked among the “Top 15” Arab universities, including Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco.
King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia topped the ranking at number one, followed by the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia.
Among the “Top 5” are also King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates University. Egypt’s well known institutions, Suez Canal, Alexandria and Cairo universities ranked 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively.
The rankings of Arab universities were released ahead of THE’s “MENA Universities Summit” to be held between February 2 and 4 at the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain.
The same study ranked U.S. California Institute of Technology as the best university in the world, followed by the U.K.’s University of Oxford (2), and the U.S.’s Stanford University (3).
The United States dominates the global rankings with six of its institutions among the “Top 10” worldwide.
According to the same study, the first African university to appear in the 2016 rankings is the University of Cape Town in South Africa at number 120.
Last October, the Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech was the only Moroccan university to appear in the previous ranking of THE’s 2015-2016 listing of 800 of the world’s best universities.
