Rabat – First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters landed in Marrakesh last night and were greeted by Lalla Salma, King Mohammed VI’s wife, on the tarmac.
Mrs. Obama will participate in a discussion, moderated by CNN’s Isha Seshay, with Meryl Streep, Freida Pinto, and several Moroccan adolescent girls about the challenges facing female students in the Moroccan educational system.
Mrs. Obama’s trip attempts to shed light upon the obstacles that block girls across the developing world from attending school. Following her visit to Liberia yesterday, USAID announced that it would allocate up to $27 million towards girls education in Liberia. In Morocco, the First Lady’s office stated that Mrs.
Obama “will also highlight commitments made by the U.S. Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation and USAID in partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco to help adolescent girls in Morocco go to school and stay in school.”
Mrs. Obama’s visit to Morocco is part of the US initiative “Let Girls Learn,” launched in 2015 and supported by the First Lady of the United States.
Michelle Obama will participate, Tuesday in Marrakech, in an exchange with adolescents on the issue of education and girls schooling.
Participants will discuss the factors that prevent girls from the region to pursue quality education.
Launched in March 2015 by the President and First Lady of the United States, this initiative seeks to help the more than 62 million girls around the world– half of whom are adolescent – go to school and stay there.
