Rabat – This year, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) is presenting Morocco a “model” for winning an election by running a clean campaign, according to the party’s Vice Secretary-General Suleiman al-Omrani.
“It seems today that the PJD still enjoys the trust of the Moroccan people,” al-Omrani told a reporter for Lakome2 during a rally on Wednesday.
“Our enemies can compete with us in the their platforms and challenge our achievements…but today, the PJD presents a model for running a clean campaign built on principles of transparency and integrity for our candidates.”
The PJD currently holds 107 seats in the parliament and is the largest member of the ruling coalition.
“I am confident that the Moroccan people will take the opportunity in October to support the PJD and will vote for and confirm the PJD’s existing seats [as of 2011] or increase the number,” Suleiman said, adding that his party has nominated the most skilled and honorable men and woman it has to offer.
The weeks leading up to the national legislative elections on October 7th have been filled with scandal.
Earlier this month, unknown political forces organized a march against Secretary-General Abdelilah Benkirane, who has been the Moroccan Head of Government since 2011.
Many accused the PJD’s main political rival, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), of organizing the march, though its spokesperson categorically rejected the claims.
Al-Omrani’s party has caused scandal as well. Two leading figures from the Unity and Reform Movement (MUR) – the religious wing of the PJD – were suspended from the party after accusations of adultery proved to be true after an investigation.
