Moroccan Writers Condemn Assassination of Jordanian Writer Nahed Hattar

Rabat – The Union of Moroccan Writers on Monday condemned the assassination of Jordanian writer and journalist Nahed Hattar, shot in Abdali, center of Amman.

The Union “strongly condemns this barbaric and abject terrorist act”, the Union said in a statement, adding that this assassination is “the culmination of a long process of restrictions, crimes and murders that have touched many of our brightest Arab intellectuals and writers”.

Expressing its full solidarity with the family of the victim, the Union noted that “the assassination of this gifted and bold intellectual, known for his unique courage and devotion to freedom and modernity in the Arab world (…), undermines all attempts of emancipation and rationalization”.

The Union added that intellectuals “are living in a stifling climate of restriction of freedom of expression and thought”.

Jordanian writer Nahed Hattar was shot dead outside a court where he was facing charges for sharing a cartoon deemed offensive to Islam.
