Casablanca – Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel’s marriage with his partner Gauthier Destenay on Friday, November 25 made him the EU’s second leader to marry a same-sex Partner.
The 43-year-old Prime Minister of Luxembourg officially married his partner, Gauthier Destenay, last Friday, a few months after the Luxembourg parliament lifted the gay marriage ban.
By doing so, the Prime Minister became the second EU leader to marry a same-sex partner after Johanna Sigurdardottir, Iceland’s Prime Minister, who married her partner in 2010.
According to The Guardian, the Christian People’s party banned same-sex marriage in 2007. In 2013, however, 83 percent of Luxembourgers were favorable to changing the law and lifting the ban on same-sex marriage.
The same source revealed that Destenay, an architect, is the one who proposed to the Prime Minister. He reportedly asked for his hand shortly after the government ratified gay marriage.
The BBC stated that the Prime Minister would not go on a honeymoon as other important missions are awaiting him, like attending an economic forum in Kazakhstan.
A friend of the newly wed government official told French news agency AFP that the Prime Minister would like to keep his private life to himself and would not appreciate excessive public attention.
