Casablanca – A well-known Moroccan Intellectual says the incident of the fishmonger who died being crushed in a garbage truck compactor is being exploited by human rights organizations in order to cause instability in Morocco and the region.
Moroccan intellectual and researcher in Applied Propaganda Studies, Amine Sossi Alaoui, argued the point during a debate on Monte Carlo Radio regarding the tragedy of Mouhcine Fikri whose death inside of a garbage track compactor mobilized masses of outraged Moroccans to protest against what they see as abuse of power in Morocco.
The researcher began by saying that human rights organizations have exploited the incident for the purpose of encouraging the masses against the state, thereby causing insurgencies in Morocco, adding that this “is similar to all propaganda manifestations around the world.”
Sossi Alaoui explained that these organizations have put a lot of effort into sharing the shocking pictures of the victim to stir people’s emotions and therefore “cause the government to lose control over its pillars. And this is what we have seen in many Arab countries like Syria and Libya, and we have seen the effects of this instigation.”
As for the social media discourse which emerged following the incident, the Moroccan intellectual asserted that there has been a deliberate use of “exaggerated expression” such as ‘Crush his mother,’” to give the impression that the victim was crushed intentionally, whereas all witnesses’ accounts deny that the order had been given.
The researcher continued his argument saying that many human rights organizations have been trained in these techniques “to create maximum chaos and facilitate the creation of the ‘Great Middle-East’ that Condoleezza Rice mentioned in her interview with the Washington Post in 2003.”
“If we look at the United States as an example, where the police kill African Americans on a daily basis, the situation does not evolve into chaos because there isn’t an incendiary media that could cause chaos,” stated Sossi Alaoui, alluding to the current policing issues in the U.S.
The academic also drew attention to the fact that these Moroccan human rights organizations have not given fair attention to the fact that the victim himself was engaged in the illegal smuggling of Swordfish and had run from the police, “which may have resulted in confusion and mistakes” on their side.
