Rabat – Recent elections signaled threats to Morocco’s political future, they said.

Maghareb Centre for social studies held a discussion forum on Monday on Morocco’s political future, in the wake of 7th of October elections in a bid to get a closer look on the complicated electoral situation.

The forum brought together a wide range of multidisciplinary academics, and researchers who tackled the elections dynamics, electoral process from the social and political perspective, the political parties role, and the challenges of political actions.

Attendees agreed that “the ideological power of political parties has diminished and there is an absence of concrete programs in addition to a general weakness of public discussions,” the center said in a statement.

Regarding the politicians’ discourse, it seems that there was a huge verbal roughness and moral violence whether those politicians are party members or government officials, the attendees added.

“Many of their statements are aggressive and rely on rumors. Many of the politicians use unethical ways to counter other political opponents.”

Moreover, politicians amplify their achievements and magnify themselves.

There needs to be increased research in the process of establishing parties and understanding the nature of those parties.

On the other hand, the researchers tackled the elections expenses, and potential ways to allocate funding for the electoral process.

The quality of elected parliamentarians was also questioned, as some of them do not have extensive political background and instead there is phenomena of “families in the parliament,” which is a huge matter of concern, according to the researchers.

They also expressed fears of potential conflicts and ideological polarization between political parties which will eventually tear the societal body.

The forum culminated with a framework document which highlighted the importance of doing a systematic analysis based on two aspects; a cross-disciplinary analysis to utilise strength points of each knowledge field to understand the complex political aspects, and outlining a collaborative scientific thinking mechanism to explain the viewpoints on the examined issues.
