Rabat – In response to Russia and China’s ambitions to increase their nuclear arms arsenal, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump told MSNBC, “Let it be an arms race.”
In an interview with the American network MSNBC, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said that America would race against other countries as far as increasing its nuclear arms arsenal.
“We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all,” he pointed out, referring to China and Russia, which recently publicized their ambitions to strengthen their nuclear capabilities.
The President-elect also stated in a Twitter post Thursday 22 that, “the United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.”
This statement raised concerns in the U.S. as the country has, for a long time, sought to reduce atomic weapons throughout the world.
In response to the President-elect’s controversial tweet, Trump spokesman Jason Miller said:
“President-elect Trump was referring to the threat of nuclear proliferation and the critical need to prevent it — particularly to and among terrorist organizations and unstable and rogue regimes.”
Trump secretary Sean Spicer also commented on Trump’s remarks on MSNBC by saying that an arms race is improbable, as the countries willing to undertake the expansion of their nuclear powers would eventually renounce the challenge.
“He’s going to ensure that other countries get the message that he’s not going to sit back and allow that,” Spicer said in an interview with NBC. “What’s going to happen is they will come to their senses, and we will all be just fine.”
Commenting on Trump’s tweet, the renown MIT professor Noam Chomsky, said that Trump’s nuclear ambition is “one of the most frightening things”.
