Rabat – A gathering will take place Monday February 6, to mourn and honor the memory of the victims of January 29’s shooting in Quebec.
The memorial service is scheduled from 6 to 9 PM in front of the Canadian Embassy in Rabat. More than 100 people have confirmed they will attend the event.
The gathering is intended to show solidarity with Quebec and the families of the six victims killed during the shooting: Azzeddine Soufiane (Morocco), Khaled Belkacemi (Algeria), Abdelkrim Hassane (Algeria), Aboubaker Thabti (Tunisia), and Mamadou and Ibrahima Tanou Barry (Guinea).
The event was organized by the Moroccan Committee of Vigilance and Alert in coordination with the Canadian Embassy.
“Many of us wanted to organize a gathering in solidarity with the Canadian people, who themselves reacted strongly, and not merely restrict ourselves to messages on social networks,” explained the committee.
The committee called on citizens to bring flowers, candles and flags to express “their solidarity and their resistance against barbarism.”
“Soufiane’s family will fly to Morocco on Saturday for his burial,” said Rachid Ben-Amor, one of Soufiane’s close friends, in a statement to Al Jazeera.
“Soufiane enjoyed working as a grocer because it kept him in close contact with the community, and he helped many newcomers settle into life in Quebec City,” Ben-Amor added.
