Rabat – The Ministry of Education has recognized the degrees of eight private colleges.

According to daily “Al Massae,” the eight newly recognized degrees are from the following college institutions:

This recognition paves the way for degrees from private institutions to obtain equal footing with degrees delivered by public universities and colleges.

The lack of equal standing with public degrees sparked controversy as students from these private institutions saw the non-recognition of their diplomas as “unfair.”

Recognition of private colleges degrees is indispensable for young graduates hoping to pursue professions regulated by law including doctors, pharmacists, dentists and lawyers. It is also a requirement for private graduates seeking jobs in the public sector.

The Ministry of Education described the decision as an “historical” step, asserting that it intends to boost private higher education. The measure can be put in a broader context, however, characterized by fears over what many see as a slow but gradual privatization of public education and the governmental encouragement of private education.
