Rabat – Twenty people arrested for allegedly “committing crimes against internal security of Morocco,” have been referred to appear for arraignment before the Attorney General of the King at Casablanca’s Court of Appeal, as announced in a communiqué released by the Attorney General Sunday.

The Attorney General said that investigations are being conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office into various crimes having allegedly been committed, including “premeditatedly  burning  a vehicle, attacks on the internal security of Morocco, delivery of sums of money to promote activities and propaganda that might undermine the unity of the Kingdom and its sovereignty, [actions taken] to shake citizens’ loyalty to the Moroccan State and the institutions of the Moroccan people, offering shelter to a wanted person, and incitement against the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.”

The Attorney General added that, following an interrogation, one of the suspects had been released under surveillance, while other suspects are still in custody, noting that they have been transferred to the local prison in Casablanca.

The communiqué concluded by saying the investigation is ongoing.

Seven months of protests have followed the death in October of Mouhcine Fikri, a fishmonger who was fatally crushed in a garbage truck trash compactor while attempting to retrieve his merchandise which had been confiscated and thrown away by authorities.

Tensions escalated over the past week following the police’s pursuit and arrest of Nasser Zafzafi.

Zafzafi was taken into custody on Monday after interrupting a Friday sermon he viewed as denouncing the “Hirak” movement. He was transferred to Casablanca for investigation, and has since been charged with “obstructing the right of worship” and “undermining state security.”

Zafzafi, along with 30 other protesters arrested for alleged violence against security forces in Al Hoceima, are reportedly expected to appear in court on Monday at Casablanca’s Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal.
